Jakarta –
President Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky ordered security to be stepped up. One of the enhanced regional security is at the border of his country with Belarus.
This follows Wagner’s brief uprising against Moscow last week. The Kremlin gave fighters from private armies the choice of signing a contract with Russia’s defense ministry, returning to civilian life or going into exile in Belarus, whose authoritarian leader is an ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Zelensky said he had been alerted on Friday (30/6) local time, about the situation in Belarus by intelligence services Ukraine GUR, foreign intelligence services and border guards.
“By the decision of Stavka (chief of staff), Commander-in-Chief (Valery) Zaluzhny and General (Sergey) Nayev were ordered to strengthen the northern direction to ensure peace. There is a suitable deadline,” the Ukrainian leader said in a video posted on Telegram.
Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko offered protection to Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin after he ended an armed uprising a week ago that posed the biggest challenge to Putin’s rule in Russia.
Lukashenko said this week his troops would benefit from commander Wagner’s combat “experience”. At the same time, he underestimated the activities mercenaries would undertake in the country.
