President Yoon said, “We are now facing a new threat that has never existed before,” and “Aberrantly motivated crimes that threaten an unspecified number of people without a specific motive are threatening the peaceful daily lives of the people.”
He said, “Gangsters are expanding the scope of their activities to include malicious fraud and other crimes against the public’s livelihood,” and “Furthermore, drugs and cyber gambling are infiltrating the daily lives of our children, threatening the future of the Republic of Korea.”
President Yoon added, “New crimes abusing cutting-edge technologies such as AI and deepfakes are rapidly increasing, and fake news continues.”
He then ordered the police to strengthen its cutting-edge investigative capabilities, saying, “It will be difficult to protect the lives and safety of the people from these new threats if we only stick to the existing methods of security activities.”
He said, “We must accelerate the development of an identification system for false and manipulated content such as deepfakes and eradicate digital sex crimes through collaboration with relevant agencies.” He also said, “I hope you respond quickly and strongly to fake news that is shaking our society.”
In addition, “Punishment for crimes after the fact is important, but it is more important to prevent crimes in advance,” he said. “The newly established mobile patrol unit and criminal mobile unit will closely detect causes of anxiety and provide prompt action in urgent moments when the public’s safety is threatened.” “Please respond appropriately,” he said.
He went on to say, “We will also significantly expand our training infrastructure so that field police officers can develop their capabilities,” and “We will spare no efforts, including expanding immunity provisions, to ensure that the police’s legitimate law enforcement is protected by the state.”
