President Xi Jinping Visits Flood-Affected Areas in Northern China and Monitors Southern China’s Heavy Rain Situation

On the 7th, Chinese President Xi Jinping toured for the first time the northern part of the country, which was affected by severe flooding earlier this summer. Meanwhile, southern China and Hong Kong are experiencing heavy rain.

According to a report from China’s state-run Xinhua news agency, President Xi visited Shangzhi city in northeastern China’s Heilongjiang province. He inspected rice fields and checked on the status of restoration of houses and infrastructure.

According to a video posted on the social media site X (formerly Twitter) by Hu Xijin, former editor-in-chief of the Global Times, an official newspaper of the Chinese Communist Party, President Xi told villagers that he was “concerned about the disaster-stricken areas.” He said, “In China, when the people are faced with difficulties, we need to demonstrate the advantages of our socialism. In other words, when trouble occurs in a certain place, support gathers from all quarters, and the state also This means we will provide full support.”

At least 80 people were killed in northern China earlier this summer when heavy rains caused by typhoons caused flooding. On August 17, Mr. Xi presided over a meeting of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party’s Central Politburo, urging the prompt restoration of transportation, communications and power facilities.

While Xi is touring the northeast, Hong Kong and southern China’s Guangdong province are being hit by heavy rain. Schools in Hong Kong were closed on the 8th, and stock trading was suspended for the entire day.
