MOSCOW – President Vladimir Putin has reportedly sacked General Valery Gerasimov, the warlord Russia in the fight against Ukraine.
The report was published by the independent Russian media, The Moscow TimesMonday (10/7/2023).
The report, citing Russia’s pro-war Telegram channel, said the move was a continuation of Putin’s purge of military top brass after last month’s attempted coup by Wagner Group mercenaries.
The report said General Valery Gerasimov, 67, who also served as chief of the Russian General Military Staff, had been ousted as warlord less than six months after he was appointed.
Gerasimov, continued the report, has been replaced by Colonel General Mikhail Teplinskiy.
Putin’s move, which has not been officially confirmed by the Kremlin, is the latest upheaval in command of Russia’s nearly 17-month-old invasion of Ukraine.
During the war, Putin sacked several military leaders including Colonel General Mikhail Mizintsev, also known as the “Butcher of Mariupol”, as well as General Rustam Muradov who was behind the massacre at Vuhledar earlier this year.
Gerasimov would remain in charge of the Russian Armed Forces as Chief of the General Staff, but overall responsibility for the war now rested with Teplinskiy.
