MOSCOW – The Kremlin on Saturday (19/8/2023) said the President Vladimir Putin has gathered the generals Russia who became the commander of the war in Ukraine.

The announcement of a meeting by Putin and his generals comes after Ukraine claimed victory in a counteroffensive on its southeastern front.

“Vladimir Putin held a meeting at the headquarters of the special military operations group in Rostov-on-Don,” the Kremlin said in a statement. Reuters.

Russia, which launched its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, has described its actions as a special military operation – walking away from a narrative of war.

The Kremlin added that Putin, Russia’s commander-in-chief, was listening to reports from the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces Gen. Valery Gerasimov, who is in charge of Moscow’s operations in Ukraine, and other top military commanders and officers.

The meeting came after Ukraine, whose counteroffensive to reclaim land taken by Russia in the first months of war was slower than expected, said it was liberating a small village along the front, its first since July.

The Kremlin did not provide additional details about the meeting of Putin and his generals, and it was not clear when it would take place.

Video published by the news agency RIA shows Gerasimov greeting Putin in the evening and leading him into a building after a brief handshake.
