President Tebboune discusses Algeria joining BRICS

(Belga) Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune spoke on Sunday evening of the possibility of Algeria joining the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa). “The BRICS are of interest to us because they allow us to move away from the pull of the two poles,” he said.

“They constitute an economic and political force”, added Mr. Tebboune, in a televised interview. He further stressed that one should not “get ahead of events”, but that there would be “good news”. “We need economic conditions” to integrate the BRICS and Algeria meets a good part of these criteria, he argued. President Tebboune took part in the BRICS summit by videoconference at the end of June. He had put forward “Algeria’s approach to the imperative establishment of a new economic order, where parity and equity between countries will reign”, according to a report by the official APS agency.
