These were taken at an informal meeting during a working visit by a presidential delegation to the Nickerie district in western Suriname. This visit was part of an introductory tour in all districts.

The photos show that by no means all those present wore a mouth mask and the 1.5 meters was not taken into account. Santokhi has promised to improve. “We know it is difficult. We in the government have also experienced moments in which things have not gone quite according to plan with regard to Covid-19 protocols, ”said the president who intends to set the right example together with Vice President Ronnie Brunswijk and the entire Council of Ministers. He also said the government will take steps to ensure that the Covid-19 protocols are always enforced. He called on citizens to keep a close eye on each other and point out the known measures to each other.
It is not the first time that a Surinamese president has to apologize for violating the corona rules. In April this year, ex-president Desi Bouterse made a mistake. The undesirable situation arose when he was stopped by a group of young people to discuss a number of problems. Before he realized it, the group had grown larger than the maximum allowed ten people and the 1.5 meters was also lost, he said at the time. Bouterse also apologized and said that it is blameworthy if authorities behave in this way.
