“Ms. Gabriel’s sudden urge to call for the removal of Ivan Geshev hardly excites me,” President Rumen Radev said in South Africa.
According to him, a very important question is currently “hanging” – whether Maria Gabriel’s request is “the fruit of a three-year-delayed enlightenment of a sudden catharsis” or of a certain interest of the people behind it.
“When in 2019 I returned the SJC’s proposal to appoint Mr. Geshev as the chief prosecutor, the quota of Mrs. Gabriel’s party re-elected him, and with a majority. When I asked for Ivan Geshev’s resignation three years ago, Ms. Gabriel’s party not only supported him, but collaborated with him. When two years ago, the acting minister of justice appointed by me requested the removal of Ivan Geshev with the same reasons, the quota of Mrs. Gabriel’s party saved him – again unanimously,” the head of state recalled.
“Corruption has gone undetected, the sense of justice has been crushed, and the political process has stalled,” said Rumen Radev.
He expressed hope that the future Prime Minister of Bulgaria will mature in time for the important decisions for the country.
