President Andry Rajoelina will travel to New York, United States, next week, Lalatiana Rakotondrazafy, minister of communication and culture and no less government spokesperson, revealed yesterday. The Head of State will participate, he said, in the 77th ordinary session of the United Nations General Assembly, the largest summit of the Heads of State and Government of all UN member countries. He should speak between 20 and 24 September.
Andry Rajoelina will also have to attend the Education Transport Summit which opens yesterday in New York and which will last until next Monday where a meeting of heads of state is scheduled, convened by the Secretary General of the United Nations. But it remains to be seen whether the Malagasy president will be present as it coincides with the funeral of the Queen of England, a ceremony to which President Rajoelina is also invited.
This trip to New York, at the UN summit, is however of great political importance for the Malagasy president. This is an opportunity, once again, for Andry Rajoelina to reiterate the request of the Malagasy on the need to return the Scattered Islands, currently under the protection and possession of France. Having chosen the peaceful and diplomatic path in this approach, the Malagasy leader should once again take this opportunity to express himself.
The holding of this 77th session of the United Nations Assembly could also take place in conjunction with the second meeting of the joint Franco-Malagasy committee on the management of scattered islands, which is expected to take place in France this September.
