I hope that the state leadership of the Republic of North Macedonia will show wisdom and political courage to solve the main issues that will actually open the door to start negotiations for membership in the European Union. This was stated by President Rumen Radev to journalists and highlighted the issues related to the rights of the Macedonian Bulgarians as key to building full-fledged bilateral relations and opening the door to the start of membership negotiations.
According to the head of state, there are positive signals from the visit of the Bulgarian Prime Minister to our south-western neighbor and every step that leads to deepening of our relations should be supported. “Along with all the efforts to improve connectivity, investments, economy and cooperation, let’s not forget the main issues that need to be resolved”, the president emphasized and recalled what they are – the inclusion of Macedonian Bulgarians in the Constitution, on an equal basis with other parts of nations , as protection of their rights and giving the opportunity for their full integration into the cultural and political life of the country, the termination of the language of hatred and any encroachments on Bulgarian history and culture. “As a responsible member of the EU, we must integrate not problems, but partners”, emphasized Rumen Radev.
In response to a question, the head of state defined as absolutely untenable the claims that as soon as Bulgaria demands equality of the Macedonian Bulgarians, guaranteed in the Constitution, the RSM in turn can reciprocally demand a Macedonian minority in Bulgaria. “Let’s not forget that our constitutional arrangements are fundamentally different – the Bulgarian Constitution provides for the protection of individual rights, while the Macedonian Constitution is based on the protection of collective rights of parts of nations, so there is no way this could happen at all,” explained the president.
Asked to comment on possible changes to the Bulgarian Basic Law, the head of state pointed out that before the Constitution is opened, it is necessary to have consensus, debate, public understanding of the need for changes and a parliamentary majority. According to him, the basis of the Constitution should be the person and his rights, guarantees for an efficient and responsible prosecutor’s office, as well as other changes that should be debated, and the time for this is ripe. According to the head of state, the resignation of the chief prosecutor requested through a declaration by the parliamentary majority is an expression of the necessary political will to initiate legal and constitutional changes.
