After participating in the Ibero-American Summit held in Brazil, President Gustavo Petro announced that Colombia is officially reintegrating into the Union of South American Nations (Unasur).

The president assured that with the reincorporation he is “ratifying the treaty approved by Congress through law”.

However, the head of state put a change on the table for this body and that is to call it the “Association of South American Nations”, according to him to guarantee pluralism and permanence over time.

Colombia’s departure from Unasur was in August 2018 when former President Iván Duque assured that it was denounced “the constitutive treaty of that entity and in six months the withdrawal of Colombia from that organization will become effective.”
