– On the 15th, Park Yong-man, chairman of the Korean Chamber of Commerce and Industry, asked the court to elect Lee Jae-yong, vice chairman of Samsung Electronics. The Korean Chamber of Commerce released these details this afternoon. Chairman Park will withdraw from the position of chairman this March.
An official from the Korean Chamber of Commerce explained, “It is the first time that Chairman Park filed a petition for an entrepreneurial trial during the 7 years and 8 months he served as the chairman of Sang Sang.” In the business world, it is interpreted that President Park, who is about to end his term, sent a petition out of concern for the business world.
According to the consultation, Chairman Park stated in his petition that “If Lee, the head of Samsung, who plays a pivotal role in the Korean economy, is arrested again, it will have a negative impact on the national economy.”
Vice-Chairman Lee will be remanded on the 18th. Vice-Chairman Lee was sentenced to five years in prison at the first trial. In the subsequent appeals court, he was sentenced to two years in prison and four years probation. The Supreme Court’s all-encompassing body remanded the case, saying that it should consider a portion of the amount that the appeals court found innocent last year as guilty.
The business community is closely watching the results of Vice Chairman Lee’s trial. A business official predicted, “It is difficult to predict the sentence of remandation due to the difference between the first trial, the appeal trial, and the Supreme Court judgment.”
