President of Uruguay opens to export rice through Brazilian ports

The President of Uruguay, Luis Lacalle Pou, He was opened to the possibility of exporting rice through Brazil and not through the ports of his country, as he pointed out when participating in the inauguration of the harvest of this cereal in the department of Rocha.

On the occasion, the President affirmed that “sovereignty is not weakened” if producers must use foreign ports because they are cheaper, but rather that – on the contrary – Uruguay, in his opinion, would benefit.

“If we have to take port cargo through Brazil, because it is cheaper for the eastern region, it will be better for our country,” he said, according to a statement from the Presidency of Uruguay.

The Uruguayan president also pointed out that the Government must function to stimulate the private sector and be functional. “We come to thank the one who promotes, because that is where the country grows. The State has to facilitate so that those who work make the country grow, that is our function ”, he added.

The Minister of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries of Uruguay, Carlos María Uriarte; He commented on the improvement in logistics for the transfer of rice to the port, said that the president’s last visit to Brazil “renewed hope”, and that he is optimistically awaiting the completion of the Merín lagoon waterway.

In turn, the authority said that this work will represent extra benefits for soybeans and forestry, as well as for the rice sector.

Regarding the Merin lagoon waterway, the President of Uruguay considered it a fundamental initiative and, likewise, indicated that the Brazilian authorities agreed that it is a good work.

“I am optimistic that it will be done in a short time, although I do not like to advance until it is reality,” he said.
