The President of the Italian Council of Ministers Georgia Méloni is on a working visit to Tunisia today, Sunday, together with the President of the European Commission Ursula Van Der Leyen and the Dutch Prime Minister Marc Rutte.
This is the second working visit of the President of the Italian Council of Ministers in a week, after her previous visit on June 6 during which she met the President of the Republic and the Head of Government.
This new visit, which was announced during his recent visit to Tunisia on June 6, illustrates the renewed interest at the highest level of the European Union (commissions and member states) in Tunisia and the European will to support our countries in the fight against irregular migration, against a backdrop of resurgence of this phenomenon in the Mediterranean with the arrival of more than 50,000 migrants on Italian soil, including 27,000 from the Tunisian coast (3,400 Tunisians) according to a source informed to the TAP.
According to the same source, the successive visits to Tunisia by European Commissioner for the Economy Paolo Gentiloni (March 27, 2023), European Commissioner for Home Affairs Ylva Johansson (April 27, 2023) and the two Belgian and Portuguese Interior Ministers ( May 10, 2023) had made it possible to better understand the situation in Tunisia and to inform European partners of the need to help Tunisia overcome economic and social difficulties.
The European decision to associate the Dutch Prime Minister with this visit is explained by the friendly relations uniting Tunisia and the Netherlands and the declarations of this official in favor of our country, in particular during his meeting with the Head of the government at the Davos summit on January 18, 2023, said the same source.
It should be recalled that this visit is taking place at the end of the G7 summit, held in Hiroshima last May, the final declaration of which encouraged Tunisia to improve the country’s economic and social situation and to reach an agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
According to Italian media sources, the President of the Italian Council of Ministers and the President of the Italian Commission met, on the sidelines of this summit, the Managing Director of the IMF Kristalina Georgieva and discussed the economic situation in Tunisia and its impact on the file of the migration.
