(ANSA) – GUATEMALA, OCTOBER 22 – The president of Guatemala, Bernardo Arévalo, met at his residence with the journalist José Rubén Zamora, who was released from prison and placed under house arrest on Saturday. The office of the Presidency reported that during the meeting several topics were discussed, in particular the importance of the liberation of Zamora as an opportunity to put an end to what was defined as “political persecution in Guatemala and the result of the liberation of those who still suffer from prison, the result of specious investigations and arbitrary measures”. Last Friday, a Guatemalan court ordered that Zamora be released from prison for exceeding the time limit established by law, although he remains on trial for alleged obstruction of justice. The Special Prosecutor’s Office against impunity opposed the measure. The journalist was arrested in July 2022 and in June 2023 a court sentenced him to six years in prison for money laundering. The conviction was overturned in October 2023 by a Court of Appeal which ordered a retrial. (HANDLE).
