President of Ecuador without regretting the assault on the Mexican embassy – 2024-04-17 12:40:48

Quito/Prensa Latina

The president of Ecuador, Daniel Noboa, does not regret the decision to invade the Mexican embassy on April 5 to arrest former vice president Jorge Glas, according to an interview released on Monday.

In the dialogue for the SBS News medium, replicated this Monday in the national press, the Ecuadorian president assured that he feels on the “right side of history”, despite the global condemnation for breaking into a diplomatic headquarters and violating international norms.

Also consulted about the Vienna Convention, which for six decades has ruled on the inviolability of embassies, Noboa considered that there are “errors” not only in this treaty, but also in the Caracas Treaty on political asylum.

One of the arguments of the Ecuadorian Government is that Mexico violated the provisions of these regulations because it gave asylum to Glas, sentenced by justice, although for many he is a politically persecuted person.

When asked about how he will resolve the current crisis with Mexico, the head of the Ecuadorian Executive indicated that he would invite his counterpart Andrés Manuel López Obrador to eat ceviche or some tacos and thus be able to talk, although that will happen “when he is ready.”

Last Friday, a court of the National Court of Justice of Ecuador declared Glas’ detention “illegal” and “arbitrary”, but kept him in prison as he had pending sentences.

This Monday, after a visit to the United States, President Noboa participated in a scholarship award event in the coastal city of Guayaquil and there he stated that “it is a terrible enemy to have.”

At the event, the ruler called to vote Yes in the popular consultation next Sunday, April 21, on security and employment, although social and political movements describe this procedure as unnecessary and misleading, which endangers sovereignty and seeks job insecurity. .

Analysts such as lawyer Mauro Andino warned that one of Noboa’s main objectives with the assault on the embassy was to demobilize citizens and avoid democratic debate on the popular consultation.

“An authoritarian tactic to sneak past his ineffective and exploitative amendments. What happened in Mexico is very serious, but we cannot neglect what is coming,” said the law professor.
