The president of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel, arrived in Mexico this Sunday morning to attend the investiture ceremony of Claudia Sheinbaum as the first president of Mexico, an event that will take place next Tuesday, October 1, at the Palace Legislative Assembly of the Congress of the Union, in the Mexican capital.

Díaz-Canel arrived on a private plane at the Felipe Ángeles International Airport in Mexico City accompanied by his wife, Lis Cuesta Peraza.

The Cuban president was received by a delegation from the Secretariat (Ministry) of Foreign Affairs of Mexico and by the next Mexican Minister of Health, David Kershenobich, representing the incoming Sheinbaum Government, in addition to the diplomatic corps of the Cuban embassy in the Latin American country.

The Cuban president disembarked from the aircraft shortly after 09:30 local time and as part of the welcome ceremony he walked along a red carpet with a military honor guard, according to images released by the Mexican press.

So far, 105 countries have confirmed their attendance at the inauguration ceremony, including 16 that will be represented by their leaders, as well as some 22 international organizations, according to Sheinbaum’s office.

In this context, the president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, who was scheduled to arrive in Mexico this Sunday, announced that he will postpone his trip due to the accident of an Air Force helicopter in which eight soldiers died.

“I have decided to postpone my trip to Mexico until tomorrow due to the Air Force helicopter accident. “I want to accompany the families in their pain and continue the investigation personally to determine the causes of the event,” Petro wrote on his X social network account.
