President Nguyên Xuân Phuc meets World Bank Vice-President Victoria Kwakwa

The Vietnamese president estimated that the World Bank (WB) has supported Vietnam in recent years in reducing poverty, improving the institution and the framework of strategic infrastructure, which contributes to classifying Vietnam among the countries that have experienced impressive development steps.

The Vietnamese leader thanked the World Bank for helping Vietnam postpone the repayment of IDA loans in order to have more resources in the prevention and control of the epidemic and to maintain economic growth. He highly appreciated the WB’s initiative to support countries in the prevention and control of COVID-19, including Vietnam.

Mme Victoria Kwakwa praised Vietnam for successfully bringing the COVID-19 epidemic under control. Vietnam has also harmoniously implemented fiscal and monetary policies, creating strong economic growth; was among the few countries with positive growth in the region and recording significant achievements in exports.

Emphasizing the importance of vaccination against COVID-19, Mme Victoria Kwakwa said she would support Vietnam in purchasing vaccines.

She said Vietnam has a fairly comprehensive development policy framework, especially for the development of key economic regions, digital transformation, inclusive development, climate change response and green growth.

Regarding green growth, Mme Victoria Kwakwa highly appreciated Vietnam’s efforts to implement the Mekong Delta Climate Change Response Strategy; further reduce the rate of greenhouse gas emissions. She recommended that Vietnam reduce the development of coal-fired energy, accelerate the transition to greener and cleaner energy production.

Nguyên Xuân Phuc shared the same point of view as Mr.me Victoria Kwakwa on promoting green growth and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, while asking the WB to study and support Vietnam as well as other countries in the world to overcome the situation of poverty post-COVID-19.

He also chatted with Mme Victoria Kwakwa looking for solutions to continue to innovate, overcome limitations and gaps in the development of programs and projects, quickly disburse official development assistance (ODA). He also asked Mme Victoria Kwakwa to continue to seek sources of ODA for Vietnam in the times to come.
