President Nabih Berri’s Presidential Initiative and Dialogue Approach: A New Era for Lebanon

Hasan al-Durr wrote in “The Brigade”:

President Nabih Berri was able to impose a new presidential reality after the precise initiative he launched on the anniversary of the disappearance of Imam Musa al-Sadr.
Inspired by the thought of the unseen Imam and his dialogue approach, and by the Vatican method of choosing the Pope, and perhaps intentionally, as a message of reassurance to Christians, Berri took care of the two sides of the political dispute, taking into account the concerns of both parties.

Dialogue, from the point of view of Berri and his allies, is necessary to establish the titles of government in the new era, and then the name becomes a detail. The opposition believes that the election must be natural in the parliament, so that the deputies exercise their role in selection, and not just vote for a previously agreed-upon name, as they themselves did in 2016.

Thus, Berri suggested that the success of the dialogue is not a condition for opening the doors of the Council to successive sessions, and this is exactly what the opposition is publicly calling for, unless there is nostalgia for projects that time and circumstances have eroded, and an ambition that the conditions of the region allow for the revival of those deadly adventures.
In this context, Berri expressed his regret over the positions launched by the head of the Lebanese Forces Party last Sunday, and when asked about his opinion, he said: “I will suffice with one word: sorry” for these positions.

A week after the initiative was put forward, the Speaker of the Council seems very comfortable, according to his visitors, as he paid his due to the homeland and did everything possible to facilitate the election of the President, unless the obstructionists persist in their positions.

Visitors to Ain al-Tineh convey President Nabih Berri’s astonishment at the interpretations and analyzes that followed the launch of the presidential initiative.

Regarding the positions of some deputies who claim that they did not receive a written invitation, Berri says: “We spoke in Arabic and our speech is understood, and they refer to the discourse.”

In another context, Berri completely denied what the Free Patriotic Movement is trying to promote. He did not make a promise to elect Basil after six years, nor did he agree to financial decentralization. He says: “It is not true at all. I said and repeat my position. I support what the Taif and the constitution stipulate.”
