«President Mattarella, stay» Mengoni sings the hymn and like Benigni asks for an encore from Colle- Corriere.it

from Cesare Zapperi

At the Salone del mobile the singer approaches the head of state and begs him to stay at the Quirinale. The same invitation expressed by the Oscar winner in Venice in recent days

He approached shyly for a greeting after having sung the hymn by Mameli a cappella, thrilling the audience of the authorities present at the inauguration of the Salone del Mobile. Marco Mengoni, singer
and author of successful songs, immediately after the performance he put on his mask and took three steps in the direction of the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella. He folded his hands as if to formulate a prayer and addressed an invitation to the head of state: «President, stay still. I wish there was still this president, you can re-nominate yourself ». Mattarella, surprised, sketched out his arms, thanked the singer for the interpretation of the national anthem and greeted him with a smile.

It was a completely unexpected off-program, off-protocol as the president himself defined his speech to Milanese demonstration. But the words of Mengoni, already winner of the Sanremo Festival in 2013, are of the same tenor as those spoken only a few days ago by Roberto Benigni in Venice from the stage of the Venice Film Festival. On that occasion, the Oscar winner had taken everyone by surprise with a heartfelt appeal: «President Mattarella, stay with us a little longer, at least until the next Venice Film Festival. Stay with us until the FIFA World Cup in Qatar (to be held next year, ed) because it brings good luck, it brings good “. An auspice, underlined by an ovation from the audience, accompanied by words of appreciation for the work of the head of state.

On that occasion, like yesterday morning, Mattarella thanked but did not reply. His opinion on the hypothesis of a second mandate expressed it in several circumstances. On March 30 last he uttered a sentence that admitted no doubts: “This year is the last of my mandate.” and in May, in the face of rumors and hopes of confirmation at the Quirinale, meeting the students of a Roman school, he reaffirmed his thoughts on the subject: «In eight months my assignment will end. I am old, in a few months I will be able to rest ». Unequivocal words. But which, obviously, outside the Quirinale are still not enough to close the discussion. The words of Benigni and Mengoni confirm the appreciation that the President of the Republic enjoys among the Italians, as is also apparent from the surveys on the popularity and approval of Mattarella. And even in the world of politics there are those who, even without saying it explicitly, look favorably on a second mandate (perhaps partial) also in order not to interrupt the experience of the government led by Mario Draghi. It is true that Parliament will vote next February, and therefore the scenario may change, but as of today the president is not available.
