President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) became one of the speakers at the Summit of the economic organizations of Brazil, Russia, India, Chinaand South Africa (BRICS) in Johannesburg, Wednesday (24/8) local time.
Jokowi was present as a representative of Southeast Asian countries. This is because Indonesia is currently holding the chairmanship of ASEAN.
In that forum, he expressed his concern over conflicts and wars in the world that have resulted in a global crisis.
“Your Excellency, the world today seems to be moving without a pilot, as if moving without a clear compass. Wars and conflicts have caused human tragedies, the food crisis has resulted in tens of millions of people falling into poverty. Not to mention the threat of climate change that stalks humanity,” said Jokowi. in the South African Presidency Youtube account, Thursday (24/8).
“We have been taught from the pandemic that the global crisis will not be resolved if we work alone or by a group of countries. Collaboration and solidarity are needed to overcome it,” Jokowi said.
In that forum, leaders from BRICS member countries also attended and gave speeches. Two well-known leaders, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping have addressed the forum this afternoon.
The BRICS Summit this time focuses on fundraising and local currency loans from the New Development Bank (NDB), to economic cooperation.
There is also the issue of adding BRICS members. The South African government claims that 40 countries are interested in joining, including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Argentina, Egypt and Indonesia.
Jokowi conveyed that his presence at the BRICS did not only take part in the Summit. He will also meet a number of leaders of other countries to talk about cooperation.
“Indonesia was invited to the BRICS Summit. Of course, on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit there will be various bilateral meetings with heads of other countries,” Jokowi said at Kualanamu International Airport before leaving for Africa, North Sumatra, Sunday (20/8).
