President Jokowi Emphasizes He Will Not Campaign for 2024 General Election

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – President Joko Widodo emphasized that he will not campaign for the 2024 General Election.

He emphasized this in response to news that he would take part in the campaign in the final days before the vote on February 14 2024.

“Who said (I want to take part in the campaign)? This, this, this I want to reiterate, my previous statement. That the president is permitted by law to campaign,” said Jokowi in a press statement in North Sumatra, as reported by a YouTube broadcast. Presidential Secretariat, Wednesday (7/2/2024).

“And I have also shown you the rules. However, if the question is whether I will take part in the campaign? I answer no. I will not campaign,” stressed President Jokowi.

President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) had lunch with Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto in Magelang, Central Java, Monday (29/1/2024).

On that occasion, the Head of State also invited all Indonesian people to exercise their right to vote on Wednesday next week.

“I urge all people to use voting, come to the polling place (TPS), vote according to their choice,” said Jokowi.

“And I want to reiterate that the TNI, Polri, including BIN must be neutral and protect the sovereignty of the people,” said Jokowi.

He also asked the KPU and Bawaslu from the center to the regions to ensure that elections are carried out with integrity so that the people’s voice is truly sovereign.

“We must all maintain peaceful, fair elections, respect the election results and unite again to develop Indonesia,” he added.

Previously, Jokowi’s previous statement that the president could campaign sparked polemics and protests from various groups.

In the 2024 election, President Jokowi’s eldest son, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, is contesting as vice presidential candidate number 2, paired with Prabowo Subianto.

Jokowi’s youngest son, Kaesang Pangarep, currently also leads the Indonesian Solidarity Party, which is one of the election participants.
