President Joko Widodo and First Lady Iriana recently joined former President Megawati Soekarnoputri at her Jakarta residence for a post-Eid gathering, also known as halalbihalal, a tradition initiated by national founder and first President Soekarno to promote unity and brotherhood among Muslims. Soekarnoputri, who is also Chairperson of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), was accompanied by PDI-P Secretary General Hasto Kristyanto during the meeting. The gathering was described as intimate and the perfect example for humanity, and the political dynamics around Ganjar Pranowo’s nomination as a presidential candidate were among the topics discussed during the one-hour gathering. Soekarnoputri personally announced the nomination of Pranowo as the PDI-P candidate for the 2024 Presidential Election during the party’s internal consolidation and Eid al-Fitr gathering event, expressing her commitment to continue President Widodo’s legacy.
