President Jokowi Affirms the Continuation of Jakarta-Bandung Argo Parahyangan Train Service

Jakarta

President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) opened up about the fate of the Jakarta-Bandung Argo Parahyangan train service after the introduction of the high-speed train. Jokowi said Argo Parahyangan would remain present in society.

He said the presence of Argo Parahyangan would be an additional transportation option for the community. Just like toll roads and national roads, people are welcome to choose according to their individual wishes and needs.

“Yes, we’ll see. People are given many choices, people are given options. Choose this, choose this, choose this. Including the same road, if you want to take the national road please, if you want to take the toll road please, that’s it,” said Jokowi in Padalarang Station, Monday (2/10/2023).

On the other hand, Jokowi also wants integration of the high-speed train with other modes, so that people can move around easily.

“That’s what we continue to try to integrate fast trains with LRT, MRT, with Transjakarta, with Airport Trains, KRL, everything,” said Jokowi.

“Plus yesterday we saw at the exhibition maybe the application mode,” he continued.

The Ministry of Transportation itself previously confirmed that Argo Parahyangan would continue to operate its services. Director General of Railways at the Ministry of Transportation, Risal Wasal, said that Argo Parahyangan operations would continue to operate even though the Jakarta-Bandung High Speed Train also started operating.

“Argo Parahyangan will continue to operate,” said Risal briefly when contacted by detikcom, last Tuesday (27/6/2023).

The discourse on ‘lethal injection’ for Argo Parahyangan emerged at the end of 2022 in the midst of plans for high-speed train operations. However, this news was also denied by Risal Wasal. Last December, Risal confirmed that the Argo Parahyangan train would still operate.

“As for Argo Parahyangan, we don’t have any plans to stop it in the near future, sir. Argo Parahyangan is still running,” stressed Risal in a working meeting with Commission V of the DPR RI at the DPR RI Building, Central Jakarta, last Thursday (8/12/2022).

Risal explained that there are many differences between the Jakarta-Bandung Fast Train and the Argo Parahyangan Train, starting from the route to the target market. “Because this is a different route that the fast train travels to Argo Parahyangan, and the communities served are also somewhat different,” said Risal.
