President Joko Widodo Praises Mahfud MD as Longest-Serving Coordinating Minister: Official Resignation Given

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – President Joko Widodo is said to have praised Mahfud MD for being the longest serving Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs (Menko Polhukam) in the era of his administration.

Mahfud conveyed this after submitting a letter requesting his resignation as Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs to Jokowi who was accompanied by State Secretariat Minister Pratikno at the State Palace, Jakarta, Thursday (1/2/2024).

“The President said that Mr. Mahfud was the longest-serving Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs during Mr. Jokowi’s administration,” said Mahfud after meeting Jokowi at the State Palace.

Mahfud explained that when the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs was Tedjo Edhy Purdijatno in the 2015-2016 period, Tedjo only served for no less than a year.

Likewise with Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan who served in the 2015-2016 period. Luhut was recorded as having only served for 1 year and 4 months.

Then Wiranto served as Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs for the 2016-2019 period. The length of his position was 3.5 years.

“I’m almost 4 and a half years old, just because of political developments I have to focus on other tasks so I ask you to stop,” he stressed.

Mahfud revealed that his meeting with Jokowi only lasted 10 minutes. There was no tension in this short meeting.

Mahfud even said that his meeting with Jokowi this afternoon was full of excitement. Not a few of them also told each other when the wheels of the Advanced Indonesia Cabinet were just starting to get started.

Candidate for vice president (cawapres) number 3 ensured that this short meeting was more of a heart-to-heart conversation.

“Thank God, Mr. President is the same as me, we talk heart to heart, full of kinship, we both smile, there is no tension whatsoever, we smile, have fun, talk about the past, when we start working,” said Mahfud.

Apart from that, Mahfud also apologized to Jokowi if he was not perfect in carrying out his duties as Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs.

“I apologize to him if there were problems that I did not implement properly,” said Mahfud after meeting Jokowi at the State Palace.

It was reported that Mahfud officially gave his resignation letter directly to Jokowi this afternoon. Pratikno also accompanied the request for a resignation letter.

It is known that talk of Mahfud’s resignation from the cabinet has been emerging for the last few weeks. On Wednesday (31/1/2024), Mahfud publicly prepared a resignation letter which will be given to Jokowi.

Mahfud’s resignation was none other than because he was running as vice presidential candidate (cawapres) number 3 alongside Ganjar Pranowo who was promoted by the PDI Perjuangan (PDI-P). Mahfud’s decision to relinquish his position as Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs also received appreciation.

Former Commissioner of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) Erry Rijana Hardjapamekas said that Mahfud’s resignation was a real example of a leader who was able to control his lust for power.

“Even when the rules allow it, he doesn’t use it, let alone enjoy it, because he prioritizes the value of propriety,” said Erry Rijana, quoted from a press release, Wednesday (31/1/2024).
