President Joe Biden to Visit Hawaii to Assess and Respond to Deadliest US Wildfires in a Century

Washington

President of the United States (US) Joe Biden and his wife Jill Biden will visit Hawaii next week. Biden has come to Hawaii to review the deadliest US wildfires in more than a century that have killed more than 100 people.

Biden and the first lady will depart Monday (21/8/2023) to meet with victims as well as federal, state and local officials in Maui.

“The president continues to craft a government-wide response to the deadly Maui fire, and he has committed to providing the Hawaiian people with everything they need from the federal government as they recover from this disaster,” said a White House press release. 2023).

State governor Josh Green has repeatedly warned that the final toll from the blaze that ravaged the historic city of Lahaina would add up significantly. He estimates the death toll could be two or three times the current record of 106 people.

Biden was quick to declare a natural disaster in Hawaii by allowing the federal government to deploy emergency aid, and has spoken to Green several times.

On Tuesday, Biden, during a visit to a factory in Wisconsin, again dedicated the beginning of his speech to the Pacific islands, and assured residents they would be provided with assistance.

The White House said Biden has been in close contact with Hawaii leaders and federal emergency officials, who have suggested that search and recovery efforts are expected at an early stage next week to allow for the president’s visit.
