WASHINGTON DC – President Joe Biden on Wednesday dismissed the impeachment inquiry against him that Republican lawmakers opened in the House of Representatives and accused them of wanting to force a government shutdown.
“I don’t know why but they want to impeach me. In my opinion, they want to shut down the government,” the president said during a fundraising event in McLean, Virginia.
“I have a job to do (…) I have to face the problems that affect Americans,” he stressed.
Today’s words were Biden’s first statements on the matter since the president of the Lower House, Republican Kevin McCarthy, ordered the opening of an impeachment investigation against the president.
The objective of the Republican caucus, at least at this stage, is to obtain bank records and other documents from the president and his son Hunter Biden.
Since taking control of the House of Representatives after the midterm elections in November 2022, Republicans have advanced a series of investigations into alleged business dealings between Biden’s son and his family with China.
In a report filed in July, opposition lawmakers on the House Oversight and Accountability Committee accused the president’s family of receiving money from a Chinese energy company.
The committee released a series of bank documents showing that a Biden family associate, Rob Walker, allegedly used his company to transfer money he received from a Chinese energy company to four members of Biden’s family.
The payments were given to Biden’s son, Hunter; his sister-in-law, Hallie; his brother James and a third unidentified “Biden”, according to documents published by opposition legislators.
The impeachment resolutions must be validated by the plenary session of that chamber, where it is not yet clear that McCarthy has the support of moderate Republicans in his caucus.
Later, if successful, it would reach the Senate, which is the one that has the power to carry out these types of trials. Since the Upper House is under Democratic control, the possibility of it moving forward is limited.
