FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ and future of football at the heart of the talks
FIFA President Gianni Infantino received a high-level delegation in Zurich, led by European Commission Vice-President Margaritis Schinas, to discuss important issues relating to football, society and the promotion of global football.
The meeting allowed the two parties to discuss important global football issues around the world, e.g. These include the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™, the international match calendar proposals, the reforms to the international transfer system and FIFA’s ongoing work to create the first independent sports regulator.
“Thanks to the FIFA World Cup, a fundamental change is taking place in Qatar, which will serve as a model for the whole region,” stressed the FIFA President. “As independent international experts have repeatedly stated, hardly any other country has reformed so radically in such a short time.”
“FIFA appreciates this open and constructive dialogue with the European Commission,” the FIFA President continued. “The European Commission is a key partner, both in Europe and globally, on many aspects related to the promotion of football, from the creation of the first independent international sports regulator, the reforms of the international transfer system to the ongoing discussions on the international match calendar. “
Vice-President Schinas said of the talks: “2022 is an important year for all of us, for sport, for Europe and for young people around the world. It’s the European Year of Youth. In addition, the year ends with the FIFA World Cup, which is always a happy event for European and global solidarity.
I appreciate President Infantino’s open dialogue on the progress made in Qatar since 2010, as well as on the consultations on the future of football, the plans to reform the international transfer system and the great effort being made to ensure everyone involved in sport is protected.”
