President Higgins appoints two new High Court judges

The Supreme Court of India is set to get two new judges as the High Court judges of Uttarakhand and Calcutta will be sworn in on August 31, 2021. The appointment of the judges comes after weeks of speculation and consultation between the judiciary and the government. With the swearing in of the new judges, the Supreme Court will have a full strength of 34 judges. This move is expected to reduce the backlog of cases and help in the speedy delivery of justice in the country. In this article, we will take a closer look at the background and experience of the two new judges and what their appointment means for the Indian judiciary.

President Michael D Higgins has officially appointed two new High Court judges, Micheál P O’Higgins SC and Rory Mulcahy SC, who were nominated earlier this year by the government. The honorees received their warrants of appointment at Áras an Uachtaráin and will take the required oath before the Supreme Court on Thursday. Mulcahy specializes in areas such as local Government law, company law, and construction, and has acted as a panel member of the Dispute Resolution Authority. O’Higgins, on the other hand, has worked as a senior counsel since 2008, and has represented various clients in areas as diverse as constitutional law, judicial review, and human rights.

As we bid adieu to this article, we must applaud the appointment of two new High Court judges who are to be sworn in before the Supreme Court. Their arrival is a beacon of hope for our justice system and a promise of fair, impartial and diligent judgment. As they take their oath of office, we can only wish them the best of luck and hope that they continue to elevate the standard of our judiciary system. Here’s to a brighter and more just future.
