President: Europe’s energy dependency will turn into independence

During an official visit to Slovakia with the Prime Minister of Slovakia Eduard Heger, President Egils Levits emphasized several tasks of the European Union (EU) for strategic development: coordinated co-operation with NATO in the field of security, the path to energy independence and the fight against disinformation.

Levits and Hegers discussed the strengthening of NATO’s Eastern Flank following the decisions taken at the NATO Extraordinary Summit, as well as NATO’s strategic objectives. “The establishment of the NATO Expanded Battlegroup in Adazi several years ago was a new experience of co-operation between 10 different countries. It is now a successful experience to be taken over in the establishment of the future NATO Battlegroups,” he said.

Condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Mr Levits and Mr Hegers discussed the current security situation, assistance to refugees, and emphasized the need for a further joint struggle between democracies against disinformation and Russia’s policy of false information and propaganda.

The President and the Prime Minister of Slovakia also discussed energy issues in the EU. Both sides agreed that Europe must take decisive steps to ensure energy independence from Russia.

The two sides discussed the participation of Slovakia and its entrepreneurs in the Three Seas Initiative, as well as the forthcoming initiative summit in Riga this June.
