President Recep Tayyip Erdogan discussed with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky the extension of the Black Sea grain deal and told him that Turkey continues to make efforts to ensure peace, Anadolu Agency reported.
The two leaders spoke by phone at Zelensky’s request, the presidential communications directorate announced.
Erdogan told Zelensky that Turkey will continue to make efforts to guarantee peace, the directorate reported.
The Black Sea Grain initiative was suspended after Russia announced that it would not extend the revolutionary agreement if its demands were not met.
Russia earlier said a new grain deal with Turkiye could be possible if Moscow’s demands were met, announcing it was working on new export routes after pulling out of the Black Sea Initiative earlier this week.
The deal, brokered by the United Nations and Turkey, was intended to help avert a global food crisis by allowing grain blocked by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine to be safely exported from Black Sea ports.
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Vershinin said Moscow was ready to explore options for grain exports, but that no alternative to the Black Sea deal was currently being negotiated.
