6-7 In September, President Edgars Rinkevičs participated in the annual Three Seas Initiative Summit and Business Forum in Romania, Bucharest. During the summit, the presidents of the countries discussed solutions on how to respond to the new economic and geopolitical situation.
In his speech, the President emphasized the importance of the Three Seas Initiative in promoting regional connectivity and economic growth. The President congratulated Greece for joining the initiative, as well as Moldova and Ukraine, becoming associate members, thus strengthening the transport, energy and digital connectivity of the region.
The President noted Latvia’s readiness to support Ukrainian grain transport. “We must continue to support Ukraine. We must look for ways to strengthen the Solidarity Belts of the European Union with alternative routes. We need to create safe and reliable multimodal transport corridors. The Baltic road is one of the possibilities. Latvian ports have significant capacity and are ready to get involved,” said E. Rinkēvičs.
While participating in the Business Forum, the President emphasized that the economic development of the region is an integral part of the region’s defense. “Increasingly tighter global supply chains contribute to the security of regions. Infrastructure development serves to achieve both civil and military goals,” said E. Rinkēvičs.
