Jakarta –
President of the United States Joe Biden said that the President of Russia Vladimir Putin has lost the war in Ukraine. Biden also expressed hope that the counterattack Ukraine will force Moscow to the negotiating table.
“Putin has lost the war. Putin has real problems,” Biden said in a news conference with Finnish President Sauli Niinisto. “There is no possibility of him winning the war in Ukraine,” he was quoted as saying by news agencies ReutersFriday (14/7/2023).
Biden used his visit to Finland, NATO’s newest member, to promise that one day, Ukraine would join the alliance, even though NATO leaders failed to give Ukraine a time limit on that.
Leaders NATO has dashed Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky’s hopes of a clear timeline for joining the military alliance. At this week’s NATO summit in Vilnius, Lithuania, NATO leaders simply said they would offer an invitation only when “conditions are met”.
While Biden said no country could become a member of NATO while it was at war, having Ukraine joining now would mean “a third world war”. However, Biden promised that one day Ukraine would join NATO.
“This is not about whether they should join or not. This is about when they can join, and they will join NATO,” Biden said.
Meanwhile, President Russia Vladimir Putin told journalists that if Ukraine was accepted into NATO it would “generally make the world much more vulnerable” and increase global tensions.
