Details: If approved, she will be the first woman in Navy history to hold this position and the first woman on the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

According to Reuters, Biden’s decision came as a surprise. Pentagon officials expected the position to go to Admiral Samuel Paparo, who leads the navy in the Pacific and has experience in dealing with the growing threat from China.

“Throughout her career, Admiral Franchetti has demonstrated great experience in both the operational and political spheres.

She is the second woman in the history of the US Navy to be promoted to a four-star admiral, and once confirmed in that position, she will again go down in history as the first woman to serve as Chief of Naval Operations and on the Joint Chiefs of Staff,” Biden said.

Franchetti has served in the US Navy since 1985. She currently holds the position of Deputy Chief of Naval Operations.
