Details: Biden joked that he was “pelted with sandbags” on Thursday after he tripped and fell – but was not injured – on stage during the US Air Force Academy prom.
Biden congratulated the graduates in Colorado Springs, Colorado, tripped and fell as he walked back from the stage to his seat. He was helped up by an Air Force officer and two members of the US Secret Service.
The audience, including some members of the official delegation on stage, watched anxiously as Biden, who at 80 is the oldest president in U.S. history, returned to his seat to see the end of the ceremony.
“I got sandbags thrown at me,” the president told reporters with a smile as he returned to the White House on Thursday evening.
Two small black sandbags lay on the stage supporting the teleprompter used by Biden and the other commencement speakers.
“He’s fine,” White House spokesman Ben Labolt tweeted after the incident.
