President Biden Calls for Palestinian Sovereignty at the UN

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

President United States of America Joe Biden supported Palestinian sovereignty in his speech at the 76th General Assembly PBB. He believes that Israel and Palestine can resolve the divisions that occur in the two regions.

“But I continue to believe that a two-state solution is the best way to ensure Israel’s future as a Jewish state, a democratic state that lives in peace alongside a viable, sovereign and democratic Palestinian state,” Biden said. White House.

“We are a long way from that goal at this point, but we must not allow ourselves to give up on the possibility of progress.”

Biden said his country’s commitment to Israel is unquestionable. In addition, he invites the world to seek greater peace and security for the people of the Middle East.

In building Palestinian sovereignty, the US plans to reopen the consulate office for Palestine in Jerusalem last September.

“As Secretary (of State, Antony) Blinken announced last May, the United States will continue to process the reopening of our consulate in Jerusalem. We have no further information at this time,” a US embassy spokesman said.

Previously, Blinken stated his country’s readiness to reopen the consulate for Palestine in Jerusalem which was closed during the Donald Trump era.

“As I said to Prime Minister (Benjamin) Netanyahu and President Abbas, we will continue the process of reopening our consulate in Jerusalem,” Blinken said.

Continuing his statement, Blinken said, “(The opening of the consulate) is an important way for our country to connect and provide support for the Palestinian people.”

However, this plan reaped cons from the Israeli side. Israel’s foreign minister, Yair Lapid, considers the plan a bad idea.

“We think it’s a bad idea. Jerusalem is the capital of Israel and only Israel. For that, we don’t think it’s a good idea,” Lapid said, as reported by Reuters, Wednesday (1/9).

“We know that the (Joe Biden) government has a different view on this, but since this is happening in Israel, we believe they are listening to us carefully,” he continued.
