President Biden Assures Support and Unity in Rebuilding After Maui Wildfires

Title: President Biden Visits Wildfire-Ravaged Maui, Pledges Support for Rebuilding Efforts

LAHAINA, Hawaii, Aug 21 (Reuters) – U.S. President Joe Biden expressed admiration for the resilience of the people of Maui on Monday, as he visited the island to assess the damage caused by devastating wildfires that claimed the lives of over 114 individuals two weeks ago. Biden assured the community that America would stand by them for as long as it takes to rebuild.

During a tour of the blackened city of Lahaina, Biden spoke emotionally about the need for long-term rebuilding efforts and emphasized his commitment to ensuring that the voices and wishes of the local community are respected. He assured survivors of the wildfires that the American people stand with them and that the nation will provide unwavering support.

Addressing a gathering of 400 people at a community event, Biden, accompanied by First Lady Jill Biden, expressed his condolences and assured the residents of Maui that the entire country is there to support them. He commended the strong sense of community he witnessed during his visit and acknowledged the long road ahead for recovery.

Biden drew parallels between his personal experience of grief and the pain felt by the people of Maui, stating, “I know it’s a metaphor, but that’s you. That’s who you are. There’s no quit in Hawaii, there’s no quit in America, there’s no quit in us.”

Governor Josh Green thanked Biden for his assistance and praised the unprecedented speed of the federal response. Biden’s visit comes after criticism from some Republicans and others regarding his initial response to the Maui fires. However, Democratic Senator Brian Schatz assured reporters that Biden had instructed his entire cabinet to provide long-term federal resources to help Maui restore a sense of normalcy.

Biden’s homeland security adviser, Liz Sherwood-Randall, highlighted the president’s focus on the human experience during disasters. She mentioned Biden’s concern for the removal of hazardous waste from the affected area and the Environmental Protection Agency’s forthcoming assessment of the situation. Sherwood-Randall emphasized that recovery on this scale would take years, not months.

FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell confirmed that Biden has been regularly updated on the response efforts and expressed the president’s satisfaction with the progress. To further aid the recovery, Biden appointed FEMA Region 9 administrator Bob Fenton as the chief federal response coordinator for the long-term recovery effort.

The wind-whipped firestorm that swept through Lahaina in west Maui has claimed the lives of at least 114 people, with the death toll still rising. Maui County Mayor Richard Bissen reported a decrease in the number of officially missing individuals from over 2,000 to 850.

The White House has emphasized that Biden has been leading a comprehensive government effort to assist Hawaii in its recovery. The president approved a Hawaii disaster declaration within an hour of receiving it, and his visit to Maui was carefully timed to avoid interfering with emergency response efforts.

Maui faces unique challenges in the recovery process, as the remains of some victims are still being recovered from burned-out buildings. Approximately 85% of the disaster area has been searched, with the remaining areas, including large multi-unit buildings, requiring additional time.
