President Biden approved the Emergency Declaration for New York and Connecticut on Sunday after the arrival of tropical storm Henri and ordered federal assistance to complete state, tribal and local response efforts due to emergency conditions resulting from the storm.
During a briefing, he noted that the Government is prepared to help those affected states with the help of FEMA and also to respond to the problems of blackouts and downed trees with emergency equipment. “We want to bring this aid as soon as possible,” said the president.
The president also reminded citizens to prepare for an emergency and follow the recommendations of local governments.
The president’s action authorizes the Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to coordinate all disaster relief efforts aimed at alleviating the hardships and suffering caused by the emergency in the local population, and provide adequate assistance for the required cases.
Emergency measures, authorized under Title V of the Stafford Act, to save lives and protect property and public health and safety, and to lessen or prevent the threat of catastrophe in the counties of Albany, The Bronx, Broome, Chenango , Columbia, Delaware, Dutchess, Greene, Kings, Montgomery, Nassau, Orange, Otsego, Putnam, Queens, Rensselaer, Richmond, Rockland, Saratoga, Schenectady, Schoharie, Suffolk, Sullivan, and Westchester.
Specifically, FEMA is authorized to identify, mobilize and provide, at its discretion, the equipment and resources necessary to alleviate the impacts of the emergency. Emergency protective measures, limited to direct federal assistance and mass care reimbursement, including evacuation and shelter support, will be provided with 75 percent federal funds.
Deanne Criswell, Administrator for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) appointed Lai Sun Yee as the Federal Coordinating Officer for federal recovery operations in the affected areas.
