Nearly 470,000 Venezuelan immigrants living in the United States could benefit, following the renewal and expansion of Temporary Protected Status (TPS), which President Joe Biden announced this Wednesday.
These are the requirements and procedures that Venezuelans must comply with to qualify for TPS
Be Venezuelan and have previously resided in that country
The document from the Department of Homeland Security indicates that those who want to benefit from this TPS must demonstrate that they have Venezuelan nationality or that they had habitually resided in that country before arriving in the United States.
Have arrived in the United States before July 31, 2022
TPS applicants, under this renewal and expansion, must demonstrate that they have been continuously in the United States, since before July 31, 2023. Additionally, that they meet other DHS eligibility criteria.
Venezuelans who have entered the United States after July 31, and are in an irregular situation, will not be able to apply for Temporary Protected Status and run the risk of being expelled from the territory.
Request to benefit from the program through form I-821
Venezuelans who meet the prerequisites must apply for TPS, through form I-821, within the period to be established by the DHS.
At the same time, they must apply for a work permit through form I-765.
DHS clarified that United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) will continue to process pending applications. This means that those who have already entered it do not have to do so again.
Driven by an economic, political and humanitarian crisis spanning several years, more than 7.3 million Venezuelans have emigrated from their country and the United States is one of the main recipients.
