The School Medical Insurance program in force since 2020 and promoted by the Ministry of Education (Mineduc), according to Agreement 44-2020, was repealed by instruction of the President of the Republic, Bernardo Arévalo.
The decision was made together with the Minister of Education, Anabella Giracca, who are seeking new agreements that will allow health care to be brought to schoolchildren in public establishments nationwide.
COMMITMENT
With the repeal of Agreement 44-2020, the president asked to begin an analysis that allows the implementation of a new school health care service, which focuses on improving coverage, accessibility and quality of the service.
In addition, he emphasized that medical care for students covers all levels of the educational system, from pre-primary to diversified, regardless of their age or grade.
AGREEMENT
Initially, to guarantee the effective implementation of this service, an institutional cooperation agreement was agreed between Mineduc and the Ministry of Public Health and Social Assistance (MSPAS), which will allow efficient coordination and a gradual transition to the new system.
With this measure, it is proposed to make the execution of resources transparent, as well as accountability as a commitment to the well-being of students.
MINEDUC REQUESTED REVIEW OF THE AGREEMENT
After the plenary session of deputies approved last Thursday a operative paragraph to urge the Mineduc not to extend the school health insurance, the educational portfolio assured that it had taken immediate actions to request the financial, operational and legal review of the School Health Insurance program.
The decision made by the educational authorities contemplates the intervention of the Comptroller General of Accounts (CGC), and the Attorney General’s Office, as well as the internal audit of Mineduc.
This with the purpose of making effective decisions that correct the situation inherited since 2020, during the administration of the former president, Alejandro Giammattei, and the former Minister of Education, Claudia Ruiz.
