President Andrés Manuel López Obrador Urges SCJN to Donate 15 Billion Pesos for Hurricane Otis Victims in Acapulco

Acapulco, Gro. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador called on the ministers of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN) to reconsider and finally donate the 15 billion pesos that accumulate in 13 trusts of the Judicial Branch to support victims.

This morning the presidential conference is held from this port, which, along with Coyuca de Benítez, was devastated almost two months ago by the passage of the hurricane Otiswhich made landfall in category 5, the maximum.

When asked about the Court’s refusal to grant these resources – this after the president of the highest court, Norma Piña, promised to give them once Congress had approved eliminating the 13 trusts, but after an unconstitutionality action was taken Because Minister Javier Laynez backed down on that measure, the head of the Executive stated that “we cannot wait for them to decide.”

He stressed that the federal government has a plan to care for the people affected in Acapulco and Coyuca de Benítez.

“It is our responsibility to resolve the people’s demand, we cannot wait for them (the SCNJ) to decide whether or not they are going to give us support, or whether or not they are going to give support to the victims of Acapulco, there are 15 one billion pesos.”

-Would you call them to reconsider? -she insisted.

-Yes, yes, how not? It is wise to change your mind. Furthermore, it is for the benefit of the affected population, it is for the benefit of Acapulco, but it is also consolidating an institution, not deteriorating it, because if they do that, not only do they look bad, how does the Judiciary look? How is the Supreme Court? -answered the Tabasco native.

He even highlighted that the resources could be used to pay for the appliances that are being delivered to the victims, and to prove it, the invoices would be given to them.

Another option, said the president, would be to contribute those 15 billion pesos for the reconstruction of homes. “And what more proof if they are going to have people’s receipts?”

They could also contribute it to the urban development plan. “In other words, whatever they want to contribute (…) so that the entire drainage problem is resolved and the streets of Acapulco are paved, a project is presented and there it is. They are going to decide. I wish they would change, that they would not cling, because imagine how they look among the people.”

López Obrador called on the members of the Court not to pay attention to what is said in some media and commented that “it would be good” if the ministers visited Acapulco to become aware of the situation and the emergency.

“I hope they think about it. And they could help a lot, in any case we are going to comply,” the president concluded.
