Santo Domingo Dominican Republic. (February). President Luis Abinader stated that “it is no longer a patriotic action, it is no longer a result of social commitment, it is an intelligent act to invest in the border.”
The president led the event at the Ministry of Economy, Planning and Development to present the progress in the execution of the Development Strategy for the Border Area (MiFronteraRD), together with Minister Pável Isa Contreras, and the director of Development Policies of the Border Zone, Erick Dorrejo.
President Abinader stated that development is about overcoming the vicious circle of underdevelopment where there are no jobs, no education, or health, to a virtuous circle. “The border is already a reality that must be taken advantage of by all economic sectors of the country,” he expressed.
Abinader mentioned the interest of many companies in investing in Pedernales, and also to travel to Dajabón and Montecristi.
He cited the words of the Minister of Environment and Natural Resources, Miguel Ceara Hatton (former Minister of Economy) that development is not a personal adventure and in that regard, he highlighted that it is planning. “This is part of planning that has been focused on the poorest areas of the country,” he noted.
He highlighted the development of Pedernales and Manzanillo to create jobs in that area. “It’s a real transformation,” she said. He highlighted that he has a project to communicate the entire border and highlighted the construction of the El Cercado-Juan Santiago-Hondo Valle highway.
He described Hondo Valle, in Elías Piña as one of the most beautiful areas in the south, with enormous potential for greenhouses and production for that entire area, so the road that should be completed in the third quarter of this year and has a singular importance for the development of Elías Piña.
He maintained that another highway that is being planned and is very important is Pedernales-Duvergé. He indicated that the road has two purposes, integrating the entire development of Pedernales, Independencia and Bahoruco. It will also be an alternate highway to Pedernales.
In addition, he mentioned the Navarrete Beltway that will contribute to a saving of about 25 to 30 minutes to go to Montecristi and the Northwest Line.
Abinader indicated that with all these works there will be a competitive region with an unbeatable tax incentive for the entire country. The president assured that these actions will help the Government’s objective of reducing poverty and improving people’s quality of life. “That is what is being done with the border and all the projects,” he said.
He referred to the Pedernales public hospital as an example that competes with any private health center.
Work of the Ministry of Economy stands out
Prior to the event, President Abinader toured the facilities of the Ministry of Economy, where he was received with cheers by the collaborators.
“I want to highlight the excellent work of all the staff of the Ministry of Economy, Planning and Development, a prepared, technical, passionate and sometimes even obsessed staff, and of which I am very proud of all of you,” said the president.
The governors of the border provinces, ministers, ministers, deputy ministers, congressmen, representatives of cooperation agencies, the diplomatic corps and non-profit associations participated in the activity.
