Renovation with sensitivity

“When a room is changed and changed and changed again, much of what makes it special can be lost,” explains interior designer Colin Stief. “A big part of this project for us was preserving as much of it as possible and then building on it.”

The couple merged the apartment they had lived in since 2009 with the small studio next door, which they bought in 2011. All in all, this came to a total of 111 square meters. The challenge was to create a series of separate spaces that still formed an aesthetic whole. Although the apartments have been completely renovated, the white oak trim, fireplaces and floors still give a feeling of being connected to the old building’s past.

An atmospheric color palette – inspired by a historical painting

The colors of Adam Lister’s watercolor and Nancy Friedemann-Sánchez’s work “Cornucopia with Drones” served as a kind of guide for the design of the apartment: each room was covered in a different color – the color blocking of the cubist painting was transferred to the floor plan . The aim was to create different areas and atmospheres in a relatively small space. The taupe “Oxford Stone” from Farrow & Ball in the living room creates a rather calm ambience and leads to a room painted in the soft olive green “Bancha”. For the back wall of the kitchen, the design firm chose a natural, earthy tone – “Deep Reddish Brown” by Farrow & Ball – while the library is decorated in “Evening Sky” – a soft midnight blue – by Benjamin Moore. The extensive color palette, which Ian Ferguson describes as “atmospheric but subtle,” allows the L-shaped floor plan to merge into a whole – from lightest to darkest. Whenever doubts arose, the designers returned to the painting and drew inspiration from it.
