Preserving the Graves of Russian Soldiers who Fought for Georgia’s Territories

The graves of several thousand Russian soldiers who fought against the Ottoman Empire for the return of Adjara, Guria and Samtskhe-Javakheti to Georgia are located in Bobokvati, Khutsubani and Tsikhisdziri and need to be preserved.
This was stated by the chairman of the Association of Human Rights Defenders, Nikoloz Mzhavanadze, on October 27 at the press conference “Russian trace in the history of Georgian Adjara.”

“If Russian troops had not entered Georgia in 1878, Adjara, Guria and Javakheti would not have been part of Georgia. They don’t remember this, they don’t know… I also didn’t know that 4 thousand Russian soldiers were buried there,” said Mzhavanadze.

According to the association, it is planned to build hotels and houses on the site of the cemetery.

According to Mzhavanadze, there are monuments and crosses at the mass grave of Russian soldiers that need to be preserved.

Nikoloz Mzhavanadze called on the Georgian authorities to assign the cemetery where Russian soldiers are buried the status of a cultural heritage monument, transmits “Sputnik Georgia”.

The “Union of Human Rights Defenders” asks to “protect places associated with the reconquest of Adjara from Turkey.” In the village of Bobokvati there is a cemetery where the remains of approximately 4 thousand Russian soldiers who died at the end of the 19th century in the war with the Ottoman Empire rest.

Since the 70s of the 16th century, Adjara found itself within the borders of the Ottoman Empire. Russia’s victory in the Russian-Turkish War of 1877-1878 brought freedom from the Turkish yoke. In 1878, by decision of the Berlin Congress, Adjara was transferred to the Russian Empire. Since 1921, Adjara had the status of the Adjara Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic. Now Adjara is an autonomous republic within Georgia with a special state status.
