Preserving Marilyn Monroe’s Mansion: Los Angeles Council Member Takes Action

Los Angeles City Council member Traci Park is working on a motion to rescue a historic piece of Hollywood. It is about preserving Marilyn Monroe’s mansion located in Brentwood, California and preventing it from being demolished.

The history of the mansion

Monroe purchased the 1920s home in the early 1960s and the actress died at the residence of an overdose in 1962 at age 36. The home was purchased in May 2017 for $7.25 million according to a real estate listing, and Park said the new owner filed a demolition permit application.

Additionally, Park said the owner never submitted any plans indicating he planned to demolish the mansion when he purchased the residence. The Councilwoman learned that the city approved the demolition permit on Thursday and her office received hundreds of calls about the news throughout the week.

“To people around the world, Marilyn Monroe was more than just a movie icon,” Park said. “Her story, from her challenging childhood growing up in orphanages and foster homes, to becoming a global sensation, is a shining example of what it means to overcome adversity,” she said.

Park presented the motion during the council meeting on Friday and if approved, the property will be declared a historical-cultural monument. The city of Los Angeles has more than 1,200 places designated as Historical-Cultural Monuments. This news was announced by Telemundo 52 and NBCLA.
