“Preserve underground resources for future generations”: the ambitions of the new Sérignac drinking water treatment plant

the essential Sérignac-sur-Garonne now has a brand new drinking water treatment plant.

Thursday afternoon, the Sérignac drinking water treatment plant was inaugurated in the presence of local elected officials. After work started in November 2021, it replaces a smaller building, to meet new needs and challenges in preserving underground resources. Jointly between the Agglomeration of Agen and the company Saur (Eau de Garonne), the overall cost of the project was estimated at 8,264,000 euros.

Producing energy and consuming it directly

“This work will allow water to be taken from the Garonne and supply 7,000 inhabitants of the Agen conurbation, as well as some neighboring communities,” specify the representatives of the Conurbation. “In the medium term, this construction will also supply the municipalities of Colayrac-Saint-Cirq and Saint-Hilaire-de-Lusignan thanks to the Camélat bar bridge.” Continuity in the major projects carried out locally in recent years.

The old factory, located a few meters below, will be destroyed, however, the drilling is retained to maintain an interconnection between the two structures. “The objective was to replace an aging plant, treating only deficit deep aquifer water,” explains a plant employee. “By producing drinking water from the Garonne, we preserve underground resources for future generations.”

The factory has state-of-the-art facilities. Sand filters, settling filters, activated carbon treatment… “We also use the mud present in the Garonne. We separate it from the water, then it goes to two composting centers, one in Durance and the other in Castelsarrasin. The idea is to produce energy and consume it directly. This way, we save it as much as possible.”
