For scientific research, the Belgian Red Cross-Flanders is looking for men who have recently tested positive for corona and who want to donate plasma. The plasma from healed corona patients is used in a study at UZ Leuven, in the search for a treatment while waiting for a vaccine.
The appeal is aimed at all male corona patients who passed a positive corona test less than 2 months ago and have since recovered. “We consciously choose donors who have recently recovered because they are more likely to have sufficiently high doses of antibodies in their blood,” says Philippe Vandekerckhove, managing director of Belgian Red Cross-Flanders.
Women are not allowed to participate in the study because during pregnancy they also produce another antibody that can damage the lungs of the recipient of their plasma.
