Presentations of new cars: Renault R.S.20

To talk about the new car and the tasks for the season, Renault assembled a press conference in its showroom on the Champs Elysees in Paris on February 12.

The presentation took place on the same day as a year ago – on the day of the 143th anniversary of the founder of the company Louis Renault. Representatives of the team and racers spoke about their plans and answered questions, but the car itself was not there – it is not ready yet.

The team showed only individual photos of the nodes of the new car in a preliminary coloring for winter tests, but assured that everything will be ready by the beginning of the tests.

Last year, the team openly said that they considered the 2020 season to be transitional and were ready to put up with unsuccessful results, having spent all their efforts on preparing for 2021, when the rules in Formula 1 changed significantly and there was a chance to seriously reduce the backlog.

Such harsh statements were not made at the press conference, but the focus on the transition season remained.

Jerome Stoll, President of Renault Sport Racing: “2020 is an important transition year for the team. Our goal is to use the positive dynamics of the first three years after returning to Formula 1, while preparing in parallel for the next season, when a new cycle will begin for all teams. “

Alain Prost: “Today we gathered in Paris, on the legendary Champs Elysees, where victories are always celebrated. Thus, we want to show our passion and devotion to a great sport called Formula 1.

We need to understand that we need resources and time. Having bought Lotus in 2016, we started from afar. We had a lot of problems due to the fact that we set too high a goal. “

Cyril Abitebul

Cyril Abitebul: “The 2020 season marks the end of one cycle and the beginning of another. This year we must choose the best possible way to prepare for a major change in the regulations in 2021. Changes in the team structure in the second half of 2019 took this factor into account.

This season, which starts next week in Barcelona, where the winter tests will be held, we have three priorities. It is necessary to ensure high reliability of the car from the first race. It is necessary to guarantee a high rate of its updating. We need to restore confidence to the team, strengthen our spirit in order to achieve the maximum from each of us, in every racing weekend during this long and difficult season.

Our goal is the fourth place in the Cup of designers, but the struggle for this position promises to be sharp. “

Nick Chester, who left the team in December, led the creation of the new machine – he was not at a press conference, and Pat Fry was invited to develop the machine in 2021 – he started work a few days ago.

Marcin Budkowski, Executive Director of Renault F1: “By joining us, Pat will share the extensive experience gained over the years of work in several top teams. He is a specialist in a wide profile – he was also engaged in solving engineering problems, was responsible for the development of machines, and led technical departments.

His experience and knowledge will be used to solve strategic problems associated with the development of the machine in 2021, as well as with the modernization of R.S.20. We decided on the main characteristics of this chassis a few months ago, and this is more likely an evolution of the R.S.19. In fact, in the future, the process of finalizing the machine in 2020 will be limited, but it was a conscious decision related to the amount of resources at our disposal and the tasks that the team faces in the medium term. ”

Renault Chief Engineer Remy Tuffen spoke about working with a new version of the power plant …

Remy Tuffen: “Last year, we solved the important task of significantly increasing the efficiency of the power plant, and now we must fully use its capabilities in each race. At the end of the previous season, we succeeded.

In 2020, there are few changes, but we strive to achieve the highest quality integration of the engine and chassis, so that everything works more efficiently due to this. “

The composition of the team has changed, this year the partner of Daniel Riccardo will be Esteban Okon who returned to Formula 1 after a year-long break …

Daniel Riccardo: “I look forward to continuing to work with the team – after a full joint season it should now be easier. In Barcelona, in the pre-season tests, I get in the car and I’m sure that everything will go smoothly.

I know my racing engineer, I know our goals, I know the approaches to work and the characteristics of the car, so we will immediately get down to business – I can provide feedback, compare the R.S.19 and R.S.20 cars.

I have several personal goals, but it’s important that after each race weekend I feel that I have done my best, using all my attention and skill, and not choosing the easy way. ”

Esteban Ocon: “I look forward to the start of tests in Barcelona and feel that I am ready for a new task. It was useful to participate in tests in Abu Dhabi in December, I was able to get to know everyone, try out the car, which became the starting point for the creation of the 2020 car.

I really look forward to returning to the race after a year-long break – this is where I want to be. I already know part of the team, but since I left it in 2016, it has changed a lot. In Formula 1, everything is developing very quickly, and Renault also made a big step forward.

In Formula 1, everything is decided by the details, but I saw a lot of details of the Renault R.S.20. It’s nice to know how the car looks, but right after that you want to drive and appreciate the feel. ”
