(ANSA) – BARI, NOV 20 – The disused ‘Bra 2’ plant of the former Ilva in Taranto, the area in which steel slabs were produced until the 1990s, has been seized. It was the Carabinieri of the Ecological Operational Unit of Lecce in recent weeks, during an inspection, who discovered the underground areas of that abandoned area and realized that in the underground rooms, where the systems necessary to carry out the construction of the steel product, there would be thousands of cubic meters of dense liquids, of oily substances whose nature or origin is currently unknown. The Gazzetta del Mezzogiorno reports this, highlighting that it is not clear at this time whether those substances have penetrated the ground, damaging the underlying aquifer. For this reason, the newspaper underlines, the public prosecutors Mariano Buccoliero and Francesco Ciardo have opened an investigation file against unknown persons contesting the crime of unauthorized waste management and signed a decree seizing the entire area. In the document seen by the Gazzetta, the magistrates write that in the area “‘Bra 2’ there was a pit containing oily material of unknown consistency and origin”, but above all that in those environments there were “ducts for the removal, transport and disposal of the waste” . Furthermore, in their provision, the two investigators write that it is necessary to place seals on the former “Brammificio” to ascertain with technical tests the “nature, consistency and danger of the stored material”. The act also states that the investigators will also have to look for “traces of the crime attributable to suspects currently to be committed”. (HANDLE).

What are the main health risks associated with exposure to the unidentified oily substances found at the Bra 2 plant?
| Guest 1: Dr. Anna Maria Romano, Scientist at the National Institute of Environmental Protection and Research (ISPRA)
| Guest 2: Mr. Carmine Russo, President of the Environmental Committee at the Municipality of Taranto
Host: Good day, Dr. Romano and Mr. Russo. Thank you for joining us today to discuss the recent seizure of the disused ‘Bra 2’ plant, a former Ilva site in Taranto, Italy. As mentioned in the article, authorities found unidentified oily substances and waste materials stored in underground chambers. What are your initial reactions to this discovery?
Dr. Romano: Thank you for having me. I am deeply concerned about the presence of these hazardous materials, as it poses a significant threat to the environment and public health. We need to thoroughly investigate the nature and origin of these substances to ensure they don’t contaminate the groundwater or soil in the area. Additionally, we must take immediate action to mitigate any potential harm to the surrounding ecosystem.
Mr. Russo: I share Dr. Romano’s concerns. The discovery raises serious questions about the environmental management practices of former Ilva workers and potentially other parties involved. It is crucial that we determine the scale of the contamination and take appropriate measures to remediate the area.
Host: Absolutely. Can you elaborate more on the potential impact of these oily substances on the local environment and community, as well as any additional steps that need to be taken?
Dr. Romano: As scientists, our primary concern is understanding the long-term impact of these substances on the environment. If they have penetrated the ground, they could potentially contaminate the local groundwater and soil, leading to health hazards for both humans and wildlife. The investigation should include extensive testing to determine the nature and composition of the substances, as well as their potential toxicity. In terms of remediation, it’s crucial to implement effective waste management practices and consider the possibility of cleaning up the area.
Mr. Russo: From a municipal perspective, ensuring the safety of our residents is our top priority. We’re working closely with local authorities and the prosecutor’s office to investigate the situation and develop a
