The intensive care unit of the Emile Durkheim Hospital Center is in solitary confinement. In question, the presence of an emerging highly resistant bacterium (BHRe). A complete disinfection of the premises will be carried out.
“Following the reception of a patient carrying an emerging highly resistant bacteria (BHRe), the hospital’s intensive care unit is no longer welcoming new patients”, says the Center Hospitalier Emile Durkheim in a press release. The new patients are transferred to the Nancy University Hospital. “This is a well-known public health problem (in 2019, in Île de France alone, more than 780 cases were reported, in 97 health establishments). As they leave, the rooms will follow a disinfection protocol, before the service reopens, which should take place this Wednesday ”. In the meantime, the hospital management ensures that the presence of these BHRe does not present a risk for other patients in the hospital. “BHRe are commensal bacteria in the digestive tract. They are resistant to many antibiotics and their resistance mechanism is transferable between bacteria. The development of this resistance could eventually lead to therapeutic dead ends. This is why it is essential to carry out a complete disinfection of a department, as soon as the presence of one of these bacteria is observed ”.
